Six professors visited a library once on a day when a rare tome was stolen. Each of them entered the library, stayed for a while and then left. When two of them were at the library at the same time, at least one of them would see the other.

It was my first rehearsal with the OU Wind Orchestra. It has been about a year since I last played in a group, so it was fairly refreshing. My only hope, though, is that I won't exacerbate the injury at my right wrist.

It has often been complained the lack of street lamps along the river bank of Isis that people wouldn't go that way at night. Yet, the brilliant moon last night was more than enough to show me anything on the way. The gentle zephyr and the coldness leaves me quite invigorated when I was back.

Interestingly, the ducks/geese like to stay around the Donnington bridge where it's well illuminated. They were sleeping, or so I suppose, in the river by putting their heads in their bodies. I just hope that they wouldn't find themselves several miles downstream when they wake up!

Well, this is the third Sunday in Oxford. Instead of taking a bus, I walked all the way from Iffley to the Institute. A nice walk, with many animals along the bank of River Thames, including ducks, swans, horses, dogs, fish, rowing/punting college students, maggots and more. Even though it takes 40 minutes to get to town, it's relaxing and gives me the "correct" feeling of living abroad. That's because the city center is always crammed with buses, drunkards, beggars and worst of all, smokers.

My boss is in fact, (I found it out after I've arrived) a fairly powerful figure in combinatorics, head of the group, anyway. However, instead of theoretical math, I am looking for some more applicable facets of graph theory that would interest both parties.

It is not an easy decision, but I have decided to decline the offer from RHC. Even though there are good opportunities to enter the industry after studying cyptography at RHC and perhaps a more enjoyable time in the vincity of London, Oxford seems to me the right choice. No doubt I would have to relearn real analysis and probability theory, and to cross the threshold to study statistics, algorithms. Doesn't sound at all a comfort to me. But it's time I test my mettle after spending 6 years in comfort at HKU. I will go, full speed ahead!

I am going to Auckland then to Papeete tomorrow for the Symposium of Algebraic Geometry and its Applications, returning on 14 May. This is my first time to participate in an international conference on mathematics. I will speak on quadratic extensions of cyclic projective planes. I hope it would be fine and fun.

I spent more than three weeks to do the following.

Find a finite field with 256^3 elements.

Find a primitive element.

Find a two-dimensional subspace in it.

Find a cyclic difference set of order 256.

Use it to construct a correct solution g.

Write programs to do an exhaustive search for g.

Re-write them, using breadth-first-search.

Re-write them, using depth-first-search.

Re-write them, using breadth-first-search.

......

Have excruciating pain to get the programs run smoothly, and reasonably efficiently.

Have the programs run for a couple of days non-stopped.

Find out that such long period of running time is not necessary.

Re-write the programs in the best way ever.

Finish running them within one-dinner-time.

Prove the uniqueness of cyclic difference set of order 256.
